chinchillas and us!!!!

find out more about the owners!

well we are Megan and Amy and we are 12 and 15 from Glasgow, in Scotland. We thought we would set up a website devoted to chinchillas to tell others about these animals.

sandbaths are fun!

this is a chinchilla in a sand bath which you should give them twice weekly for about 2 mins, this makes the chinchilla's coat soft and shiny. They love sandbaths and it's funny to watch them leap in the air - but be careful, they can jump up to 3 feet! If you are strapped for cash, you don't have to buy a proper sandbath - anything big enough for the chinchilla to move around should be sufficent. The chinchilla in the picture is standard gray.

signs of illness

Crust and scaliness around the nose, eyes, and ears are symptons of skin fungus.

Notice the droppings of a single chinchilla - brownish, round, elongated or oval firm and slightly moist.

A nasal discharge and watery eyes are signs of a cold.

Drooling and slow exaggerated chewing movements often caused by irremediable tooth abnormalities.

Dirty anal region (sign of diarrhea).

Whitish, almost transparent teeth are a sign of malnutrition.

Under their thick coat, chinchillas are slender. If prominent vertabrae, pelvic bones, and ribs are palpable - the chinchilla is too thin.

Holes in the fur are a sign of a behavioral disorder in the animal (fur biting) if chinchilla is solely in a cage.
